Black History Month

What are teachers and students doing for Black History Month at Pleasanton Middle School?
From Mrs. Comstock's classroom -
We've been examining the character traits required to survive difficult situations and to reach your goals (or the stars, as in the case of the Apollo 13 Mission), so to that end:

We are reading Flygirl, aloud, in class. It's a novel, set in the 1940's, about a very light-skinned African-American woman to finds that the only way to serve her country and her dream of flying planes like her father, has to "pass" as a white woman and to join the WASP (Women's Airforce Service Pilots). Livermore Library is reading this same novel as part of their community reads program and so this week, students can receive bonus points by going to a dramatic reading of the whole novel by the Livermore Shakespeare Society or by attending a visit by the author, Sherri L. Smith, at the end of the month.

We are also reading Scope Magazine's dramatization of Claudette Colvin's stand against injustice when she refused to sit at the back of the bus in Montgomery, AL, in 1955.

This morning, we will also watch a brief video of the history of the Little Rock Nine and I will share with them my experience of hearing Dr. Terrence Roberts, one of the nine students, speak at the Museum of Tolerance.

We will use all of these to further explore what character traits are necessary for survival and achieving one's dreams and goals.
